Taiwan Mobile (TWM), one of the five operators of 3G mobile communication services in Taiwan, indicated at a press conference on September 14 that Canada-based Research in Motion (RIM) is offering technological consulting services for the launch of BlackBerry service by TWN later this month.
RIM's Asia-Pacific vice president Norm Lo attended the press conference where he stated that TWM is currently RIM's only BlackBerry partner in Taiwan, according to Lo.
With more than 160 enterprises in Taiwan having inquired about the BlackBerry service since TWM signed with RIM earlier this month, multinational and large local enterprises will be targeted in the initial sales promotion of the service, according to TWM's Chief Business Officer and senior vice president Benny Chen.
TWM will set a low minimum monthly charge of about NT$500 (US$15) and a upper limit of NT$1,500-2,000 (US$46-60) for its BlackBerry service, Chen pointed out. TWM aims to attain 20,000 BlackBerry subscribers in the first year of operations, Chen indicated.
TWM will first introduce the BlackBerry 8700g and 7290 handsets.

Rap Ringtones
According to The NPD Group, a leading consumer and retail information company, rap/hip-hop was the leading ringtone genre among those downloading ringtones in the U.S. market in July 2006. It accounted for 23 percent of ringtone downloads. The next most popular ringtone genres were: rock (17 percent), R&B (13 percent), pop (11 percent) and alternative (8 percent).
BlackBerry Pearl 8100
The BlackBerry Pearl 8100 is a much more compact device than the 7130. The BlackBerry 8100 comes in at 107x50x15mm and just 90 grams, compared to the 7130's 115x56x18mm and 120 grams. But, the Pearl manages to fit in a 1.3 megapixel camera, expandable memory and an MP3 player, making this a much more consumer friendly handset than the business-orientated BlackBerry devices that have gone before.
Internal memory is 64Mb, but the BlackBerry Pearl expands on this using a microSD slot, which is handy because the enhanced multimedia facilities on the 8100 will use memory up quickly. The Pearl retains the SureType keyboard of the 7100 series, and even comes with a screen with the same resolution of 240x260 pixels (although it's physically smaller) - the 7100 has one of the best screens around, so expect the BlackBerry Pearl to be equally impressive. The 8100 comes with stereo Bluetooth support. Battery life is somewhat reduced over the larger 7130 though.
At its heart, this is a quad-band GSM phone with GPRS and EDGE with support for BlackBerry push email (for corporates) and standard internet mail protocols (for consumers) many of which can be enhanced by using the BlackBerry Internet Service. There's also instant messaging support for AOL, MSN, ICQ and Yahoo! clients. North American customers will have access to mapping features too.

BlackBerry Pearl
The Pearl, named for its glowing navigational trackball, is the first BlackBerry geared more fully toward consumers. It's the first with a digital camera and a slot for a MicroSD mini-disc to store songs, photos and video games -- the sort of recreational functions that RIM has stoically deemed nonessential or even counterproductive for the corporate-user market.
More importantly, it's the only BlackBerry that's light and small enough to sit imperceptibly in a pocket. In fact, this nonflip handset is more compact that even most regular cell phones, including the exalted RAZR from Motorola Inc.
RIM is launching the Pearl through T-Mobile USA. The normally $300 device will go for $200 with a two-year contract and $250 with a one-year contract.
Weighing just 3.2 ounces, the candy bar-style phone is a palm-friendly 2 inches wide, 4.2 inches tall and 0.6-inch thick. By contrast, the RAZR and its non-flip cousin, the SLVR, weigh about 3.4 ounces and are roughly equal to the Pearl in width and thickness. Despite its smallness, the Pearl's screen measures nearly 2.2 inches diagonally, or just 0.4-inch less than on a full-sized Blackberry.
The trackball may seem silly to ardent fans of RIM's signature track wheel, which has been positioned on the side of every BlackBerry beeper, PDA and phone since the beginning.
